Hearing Protection Noise induced hearing loss is an escalating problem for employers and employees with the threat of deafness, tinnitus and other disorders.
Under 'The Noise at Work Regulations 1989' where an employer regularly exposes his employees to noisy environments. If noise levels exist between 85 decibels and 90 decibels the workers in those areas, who request it, must be provided with suitable hearing protection. If noise levels are above 90 decibels, the workers must be informed and trained in the use of hearing protection and all staff and visitors must be supplied with, and wear, suitable hearing protection.
Whilst it is very important to protect people's hearing, care must be taken not to over protect. Over protection can cause additional problems with personnel failing to hear alarm signals or low noise vehicles such as forklift trucks.
